Case story

Drilling beyond Lake Opapimiskan.

How Hy-Tech Drilling’s integrated drilling approach supported one of Canada’s most demanding deep exploration campaigns.

Equinox Gold's Musselwhite operation in northern Ontario is a high-grade underground gold mine with a strong production history and significant untapped potential. As part of Equinox Gold's strategy to extend mine life, Hy-Tech Drilling was selected to support an ambitious deep exploration program targeting extensions of the orebody at depths exceeding 2,500 metres. Operating in a remote fly-in environment, the campaign required specialized drilling systems, purpose-built infrastructure, and close coordination between the exploration and drilling teams to safely and efficiently execute one of Canada's most demanding deep directional drilling programs.

About the project.

Located in northern Ontario, approximately 500 kilometres north of Thunder Bay, Musselwhite is a remote, fly-in underground gold mine with a long history of production and strong exploration upside. Now operated by Equinox Gold, the site is positioned as a key asset in the company’s strategy to create long-term value through disciplined growth and resource expansion.

To support this vision, Musselwhite has launched an ambitious deep exploration program targeting extensions of the orebody well beyond current reserves. Focused on testing down plunge potential with drilling to 2,500 metres and beyond, the campaign is designed to unlock new zones of mineralization and extend the life of the operation.

Executing this program requires more than technical expertise—it demands careful coordination, specialized equipment, and a fully aligned approach to operating in one of Canada’s most remote and logistically complex environments.

The challenge.

As Orla continued exploring deeper extensions of the Musselwhite orebody, the geology itself began dictating a new approach.

The mineralization extended below Opapimiskan lake. Exploration development from underground was impractical due to cost and time. This would significantly delay the exploration program. As drilling advanced from the existing side, holes became increasingly deep and less practical. Rather than continuing to pursue the target from an increasingly challenging angle, Musselwhite's exploration team developed a different strategy: approach the mineralization from the surface on the opposite side of the lake.

That decision solved one problem, but created another.

The new drilling locations had no road access, meaning the entire operation would need to be flown in. While drilling to depths of 2,500 metres or more is achievable under conventional conditions, doing so in a fully fly-supported environment would require an entirely different level of planning, engineering and coordination.

This would not be a short campaign. The infrastructure would need to withstand multiple years of operation in northern Ontario while supporting drilling depths approaching 2,800 metres.

Drilling to these depths was only part of the challenge. Success would depend on designing an entire operating system capable of delivering consistent performance in one of Canada's most demanding remote exploration environments.

‍

‍BEYOND METERS DRILLED, MUSSELWHITE NEEDED A PARTNER WHO COULD:

  • Deliver consistent performance at extreme depths exceeding 2,500 metres
  • Engineer and manufacture specialized equipment for deep, fly-supported drilling
  • Design and sustain large-scale, winterized infrastructure over multiple years
  • Execute a fully integrated logistics and maintenance program in a remote environment
  • Align teams, processes, and mindset to ensure every element performed without compromise

The solution.

Hy-Tech approached the Musselwhite program as an integrated system, where every element needed to perform in sync. Tech 5000 rigs were modified with specialized configurations, including heavy-duty spring systems, enabling consistent performance at depths approaching 2,800 metres.

Working alongside a specialized drill pad builder, Hy-Tech helped design and construct one of its largest fly-supported drill installations. Drill shacks were engineered at up to three times the size of a standard setup to support the modified rig, the weight of thousands of metres of drill rods, and continuous multi-year operation. Built for northern conditions, the structures were fully winterized to ensure safe, reliable performance.

Behind the equipment was an equally coordinated effort. Manufacturing, engineering, logistics, maintenance planning and field operations all needed to reach readiness simultaneously before drilling could begin. Hy-Tech approached the project as an integrated system, where every element had to perform in sync and where there was little margin for error.

Close collaboration with Equinox Gold's team, including Sylvain Guerard, VP Exploration, and Nathan Earle, Exploration Manager, kept planning and execution aligned from start to finish.

Technical execution

Hy-Tech successfully delivered deep drilling performance exceeding 2,500 metres, with the capability to approach 2,800 metres in N core using modified Tech 5000 rigs.

Custom equipment enhancements and refined drilling processes ensured consistent hole quality and reliability at extreme depths—demonstrating precision in conditions where performance margins are minimal.

Operational discipline and alignment

The success of the program was driven by alignment across every stage of execution. From equipment manufacturing and logistics to maintenance and on-site operations, each element performed as part of a coordinated system.

Strong operational discipline and accountability ensured consistent performance, with a shared commitment to doing things right at every step.

Integrated remote execution

Operating in a fully fly-supported environment, Hy-Tech sustained a long-term drilling program with minimal disruption and strong efficiency.

Winterized infrastructure and coordinated logistics enabled safe, reliable operations across multiple seasons in one of Canada’s most remote exploration settings.

Voices from the field

“I have highlighted a number of times the efficient and safe mobilization of the three fly drills conducted by Hy-Tech. From the first gear to arrive at site to all three drills operating on the north shore was just 46 days. This was done without a single reported injury. That included pad construction.”

The results.

The new approach proved successful almost immediately. On the very first hole drilled on the north shore of Opapimiskan Lake, Hy-Tech intersected the targeted mineralization, validating Musselwhite's geological model and confirming the decision to approach the deposit from the opposite side.

As the campaign progressed, Hy-Tech continued pushing the limits of fly-supported deep drilling, completing holes beyond 2,500 metres, providing the geological information needed to advance Musselwhite's understanding of the deposit.

The program has contributed to continued exploration success at Musselwhite, including the discovery of additional high-grade gold zones that reinforce the upside potential of the deposit.

Today, Musselwhite is part of Equinox Gold's Canadian portfolio. The exploration work completed during Orla's ownership continues to support the long-term understanding and development of this important gold asset.
