Drillers are at the core of discovery; leading safe, efficient operations that turn hard rock into valuable insight. From setting up and maintaining equipment to guiding your crew and coordinating daily logistics at your drill, this position keeps every site running smoothly and safely.

Reporting to the Foreman, the Driller sets up and operates drilling equipment in a safe and efficient manner to maximize core recovery. Physical work involves assembling the drill components, servicing and maintaining hydraulic power packs, installing and maintaining waterlines and using all drill string components, and other related activities. Hy-Tech Drillers help to develop their Driller’s Helpers, offering regular guidance and training. On a day-to-day basis, they have a range of operational responsibilities from inspecting drill rods to communicating with helicopter pilots.

Drillers are safety leaders.

Setting the standard for job sites, identifying hazards, and exemplifying safe operating procedures are part of the job. In terms of maintenance, Drillers complete checklists and inspections, notifying the Foreman of needed repairs. The Driller is responsible for ensuring all work is completed according to Hy-Tech procedures and safe work practices.

Key responsibilities.

  • Supervises the Driller’s Helper by being a safety leader; sets expectations for safety and quality standards.
  • Ensures the safety of themselves, their Driller’s Helper and other crew on site.
  • Ensures the organization and cleanliness of the drill and drill site location.
  • Responsible for the set-up, repair & maintenance, and safe operation of all drilling-related equipment.
  • Communicates with the Foreman and Geologist on a daily basis.

Required qualifications.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in Diamond Drilling or equivalent field experience.
  • Proven safety leadership, communication and organizational skills at the drill.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and understanding of hydraulic and drilling systems.

Où vais-je travailler?

La plupart des foreurs travaillent dans leur pays d’origine, alternant entre des sites d’exploration régionaux et éloignés. De temps à autre, il peut y avoir des occasions de soutenir des projets internationaux. Les déplacements, l’hébergement et les repas sont toujours arrangés à l’avance et entièrement couverts.

How is compensation structured?

Drillers earn a competitive base wage plus metre bonuses.

What are the shift schedules like?

Typical rotations are two to four weeks in the field followed by time off. Shifts are usually 12 hours, alternating day and night depending on project schedules.

What training or certifications do I need?

A minimum of two years of diamond drilling experience is required, along with a valid driver’s licence, First Aid, and a clear drug, alcohol, and criminal record check.

Does Hy-Tech provide opportunities for advancement?

Absolutely. Many of our Foremen and Supervisors began as Driller’s Helpers. We offer ongoing field mentorship, skill assessments, and trade-recognized certifications through MiHR and Ontario Common Core programs.
